Dj Idull just posted up a new scratch routine that he’s been prepping and practicing for an upcoming tour in Brazil. He’ll be holding down his turntable wizardry in the southern hemisphere alongside Portland based MC Braile.
It’s well known that football was started by the English, but it in Jamaica the game really took hold. The first official football club was formed in 1893. It took them till 1998 to become the first English-speaking from the Caribbean to qualify for the World Cup. Since then they’ve built a global following of fans. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for South Africa.
Now let’s take the magical-realism approach for a moment…where art, sport, and political intrigue converge.
What if Bob Marley had lived longer and been the coach leading the Jamaican squad onto the field? If musician Gilberto Gil can become Brazil’s Minister of Culture, then there’s no doubt that Bob Marley could have become the head of Jamaican football. If not for his home country, then maybe he could have led an African squad.
Marley’s affinity for the game was well known and documented. It was said he was a fan of the Argentina & Brazil rivalry, while leaning towards the later. When on tour he demanded that there be ready access to a football pitch. Marley is quoted as saying…“Football is freedom, a whole universe. Me love it because you have to be skillful to play it.”
Today, it feels like the WC playing field has leveled tremendously. Any country is a threat to win the tournament. This might had been the first year we’d see an African squad in the final. But with the Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba out, we’ll see…then again maybe not.
Through my love of interviewing and talking to people I’ve been able to come in contact with so many creative types from all over. One person is my man Tone out of New York City. A dope photographer and videographer, the photos he takes and interviews he conducts always tell a story. This interview is with Shine of Crack Distributors Radio, the man behind CDR. This is a station I frequent because it keeps me in the know with current and up and coming musical artists. This interview explained by Tone: ”Get and inside look on what it’s like to be on the support side of the music industry. Guys like shine work in the background, helping artists live their dreams and grow their careers.” Shout out to Tone and CDR for always supporting creativity and talent. Enjoy!!
South Africa World Cup 2010 is about to start…Pumped, my pick for this year’s tournament is España. I’ve been a fan of the “Furia Roja – The Red Fury” since the Cup in 1982. I spent that summer in Guatemala, and being Latin America, saw just about all the games on tv.
While I know most Americans could care less about the game, football really is the world’s sport. This event is huge, and the best players come together to turn kicking a ball around into an art form. It’ll be interesting to see who the dominant players are on this go around. Lots of well know players won’t be there this year…
Johan Cruyff was one of those guys who left his mark on World Cup history. I remember reading about his exploits during the 74 and 78 campaigns. He was a part of the dominant Dutch clubs those years, but they lost in both finals to W. Germany and Argentina respectively. Actually had a chance to see him play late in his career while with the Washington Diplomats of the N.A.S.L., back when the New York Cosmos were dominating league play. The man had some skillz…

“The Hoverboard is a project made by Nils Guadagnin, a young french artist. This work is born in 2008 for an exhibition named “Back To the future”. It is a copy of the hoverboard from the movie Back to the Future II. Integrated into the board and the plinth is an electromagnetic system which levitates the board. A laser system stabilises the object in the air.
In the making of this work, this artist was thinking about different ways of presenting sculpture. In fact it’s a reflexion on the multiple possibilities of how to give a sculpture full spatial autonomy.”
